On New Years Eve Matt and I traveled up to Avila Beach from southern California. For a long time he had talked about Full of Life Flatbread Pizza. And what a treat it was!
Full of Life Flatbread Pizza is located in the quaint little town of Los Alamos. Normally the restaurant produces frozen flatbread pizza Monday through Friday and is only open to the public on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings for dinner. This has always been a problem for us since we were never driving past it during the right times.
In the center of the restaurant is the massive wood fired brick pizza oven. The atmosphere of the place was wonderful. It was an old barn converted to a production bakery and used on weekends as a restaurant. It was dark, but rustic and cozy.
The menu is based almost entirely on what is grown locally and in season. At Full of Life Flatbread they believe in the quality and freshness of local, organic, and sustainably grown ingredients. Most of the ingredients originate from within 300 miles of the restaurant.
What’s not to love?
If you can, try to snag a spot in the front like we were able to. We really enjoyed the warmth of the fire and watching the food being made up close. It’s such a treat to watch them prepare your food right in front of you.
Now onto the food!
Central Coast Sausage
Naturally Raised Pork in a Housemade Nitrate-Free Maple and Fennel Sausage, Sun-Dried Tomatoes, Onions, Mushrooms, Cheeses and Fresh Garden Herbs.
The flatbread was thin yet sturdy with a crispness to it. It had an amzing rustic and smoky taste from the wood fired oven.
Slow-Cooked Tomato Sauce with 3 Cheeses
Our Cauldron Tomato Sauce, California Whole Milk Mozzarella, Three Sisters Raw Milk Serena, and Grana Padano, Cheeses, with Fresh Garden Herbs
This was the pizza I ordered. I figured this was one of those places where the tomato sauce would be stellar and it was! The wonderful flavor of the sauce, with the delicious melty cheeses, and the crispness of the crust was just pure perfection.
Now one of the things I read in reviews is that you absolutely have to try one of the desserts. We chose Dawn’s Awesome Brownie Served with Strauss Family Creamery Vanilla Bean Ice Cream. It was so moist and rich. They also have a smore with a homemade marshmallow, and both desserts are warmed up by the edge of the wood fire oven. But if you’re craving a really indulgent treat, we learned that they have a concoction called “the beast” which is a rich brownie topped with one of their massive brownies. Way too much for the two of us, but would be amazing for a group!
Full of Life is an absolute must if you are passing by Los Alamos. Their pizzas are fantastic. You can’t miss it.
